ByeFollow privacy policy
Last updated: 20 September 2026
ByeFollow is a Chrome extension that shows who does not follow you back on Instagram and lets you unfollow those accounts.
This policy is short because the extension does very little with your data: it leaves it where it already was, on your machine.
In short
There is no server. There is no account to create. There is no analytics. Nothing the extension reads ever leaves your browser, and the author has no way of seeing your data.
What data is handled
When you hit Scan, the extension asks Instagram for the lists of the account you have open in the browser and stores the following in local Chrome storage:
- Your username, your display name and your profile picture.
- The username, display name and profile picture address of the accounts you follow and of those who follow you.
- The groups you create and which accounts you have assigned to each one.
- Your settings: pace, daily cap, language and theme.
- A history of the actions taken, with their date, time and result.
Where it is stored
In chrome.storage.local, which means on your computer disk, inside your Chrome profile. It is not sent to any server, neither the author's nor a third party's, because the extension has no server to send it to.
If you have Chrome sync enabled, note that this extension does not use chrome.storage.sync: its data does not travel between your devices.
Who it is shared with
Nobody. It is not sold, not handed over, not used for advertising, not used to train anything and not transferred to third parties under any circumstances.
Network connections
The extension talks to instagram.com from the tab you already have open, using the session you had already signed into:
- To read your followers and following lists.
- To send the unfollows you have confirmed.
Your browser also downloads profile pictures from cdninstagram.com and fbcdn.net, the servers Instagram serves its images from, the same as when you visit the site. Nothing but images is requested from those domains.
So those pictures can be displayed outside the Instagram page, the extension declares one rule that strips the Cross-Origin-Resource-Policy header from those responses. That is all the rule does: it does not redirect requests, does not block them and does not alter anything you send.
It connects to no other domain.
Your credentials
The extension never asks for your password, never accesses it and never sees it. It works with the session Chrome already has open, the same way the Instagram page itself would.
Permissions and what they are for
- storage and unlimitedStorage: keep your lists, groups and settings on your machine, so you do not have to scan again every time and so the extension can compare against the previous scan to tell who unfollowed you.
- alarms: wake the background process at the time of the next action, since minutes pass between one action and the next and Chrome suspends it.
- notifications: tell you when the work is done or when Instagram has returned a temporary block, which usually happens with the panel closed.
- scripting: load the reading bridge into your Instagram tab when that tab was already open before the extension was installed.
- Access to instagram.com: it is the only site where the extension works and the only one it accesses.
Control over your data
From Settings you can:
- Export everything stored to a JSON file.
- Wipe all of the extension data.
Uninstalling the extension also removes its local storage. And since nothing has been sent anywhere, no copy is left behind.
Children
The extension is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect data from them.
Changes
If this policy changes, the date in the header will be updated and the new version will live at this same address. Substantive changes will also be announced in the extension description.
Relationship with Instagram
ByeFollow is not affiliated with, associated with, authorised by or endorsed by Instagram or Meta Platforms, Inc. Instagram is a registered trademark of Meta Platforms, Inc. Automating actions goes against the Instagram terms of use, and using this tool may lead to your account receiving temporary restrictions. The choice to use it is yours.
